Railway Preservation Society of Ireland’s GNR 4-4-0 No. 85 Merlin was rostered to work its last trip for the foreseeable future on December 17 – its boiler certificate being due to expire December 31. The 4-4-0 has been in traffic since 2014 and has been the mainstay of main line steam out of Dublin. It is expected to follow NCC ‘Jeep’WT Class 2-6-4T No. 4, which is the next loco due to be overhauled by the RPSI once GNR S Class 4-4-0 No. 171 Slieve Gullion returns to service later in 2024. No. 85 is seen climbing out of Drumcondra station for Maynooth with the second Santa train on December 2.
