IARNRÓD Éireann’s held its leadership conference on May 30 in Dublin where Michael Power, head of transformation, outlined IÉ’s emerging Rail 2050 strategy, to allow it to build beyond the current National Development Plan.
Among the plans outlined is the ambition to increase track capacity on the network by continuing the four tracking of the Dublin to Cork line from Hazlehatch as far as Portarlington where the route via Athlone to Galway diverges. The strategy envisages Portarlington to Athlone doubled and from Cherryville near Kildare to Kilkenny, which was originally double track as far as Carlow but singled in 1917, doubled.
The strategy reaffirms IÉ’s plans to redouble Limerick to Limerick Junction from Killonan and from Athenry into Galway.
