To be banned by 2030 – Amtrak operated, but owned by the State of California, EMD F59PHI 2013, built in 2001, seen alongside San Francisco Bay just north of San Jose on December 30, 2021, with an Amtrak California service from Sacramento to San Jose. An order for four Stadler built hydrogen powered ‘ZEMUs’ to replace these trains (with options for 25 more) was announced at Innotrans in 2022 (see RM November 2022, p104).
