A 12-week programme to remodel Carstairs Junction on the West Coast Main Line was completed at the beginning of June, allowing normal rail schedules to resume.
During the works, passenger and freight workings were diverted via Shoots with a reversal at West Calder Jct, or over the Glasgow & South Western line.
This once in a generation redesign of Carstairs has cost £164m, funded by a Scottish Government investment to make the junction more reliable and better able to cope with future passenger and freight demands. Much of the equipment had been in place for decades and had become life expired.
New track sections, overhead lines, signalling and telecoms were installed, with improvements to station platforms, embankments and drainage across the junction, and a speed restriction removed.
