THE ISLANDER: With the Solent and Isle of Wight as a backdrop, Hayling Light Railway’s steam-outline diesel Jack built by Alan Keef Ltd in 1988 leaves Beachlands behind as it heads back to Eastoke Corner on May 28.

THE Talyllyn Railway (TR) celebrated its women volunteers on May 13, and may have set another railway preservation first in operating a full two-train timetable with every operating role, encompassing train crew, controller, blockman and all ancillary roles (including shop, station and museum staff) undertaken by women.
The event was organised by Barbara Fuller and Sarah Thomas, who each have over 50 years of Talyllyn volunteering behind them. Together with joint TR general managers Liz Porrett and Lorraine Simkiss they welcomed local MP Liz Saville-Roberts to the celebrations.
