EAST Midlands Railway has issued a warning to passengers to ensure they have sufficient phone battery power to allow the presentation of e-ticket and railcards. The operator adds that gate line staff have access to phone chargers and could ask passengers to charge their devices to prove a fare has been paid.
EMR says its revenue protection teams and train conductors have no means of distinguishing between genuine passengers and those deliberately attempting to fare evade, and in such circumstances will have no option but to issue a penalty fare, which has recently increased to £100.
