THE fifth batch of Chinesebuilt Class DL diesel locos for KiwRail arrived in New Zealand on March 27, 2023, and the locomotives were transferred as one train to Te Rapa from Mount Maunganui for commissioning on April 2, hauled by one of their classmates.
These 10 locomotives are the last of the DL order and this last batch was ordered in mid-2020 but delivery was delayed due to Covid-19. Like the earlier locos they were built by Chinese firm CRRC at its Dalian works and are equipped with MTU 20V 4000R43 engines. KiwiRail now has 73 DLs, all operating on the North Island.
