THE initial phase of a £17.5 million project at the Port of Southampton to create greater capacity for moving containers by rail has been completed and handed over to operator Solent Stevedores.
Work, including the laying of fibre reinforced concrete, has taken place on a 5.5 acre site to prepare it for the storage of intermodal containers, which can be stacked seven high.
The next stages will see a further 6.5 acres of space connected to the existing rail terminal and track works completed.
