IMPROVEMENTS have been completed to facilities at Barrowin-Furness light maintenance depot which play an essential role in the introduction of six-car services (using pairs of Class 195 trains) between the Cumbrian town and Manchester Airport.
A new 75 metre-long servicing road allows three diesel multiple unit cars to be serviced and refuelled simultaneously. Previously, only one car could be handled at a time. The new facilities also have a steel canopy, providing shelter to staff, as well as housing equipment including the fuel pumps. Energy efficient lighting has been installed.
“The new facilities have meant that trains are able to be serviced faster, keeping them out in service for our customers – improving reliability for the region and beyond,” said Northern’s regional director Chris Jackson.
RTS Infrastructure Services carried out the improvements to a tight timescale.
