Hydrogen fuel cell future for Indian narrow gauge lines?
IN February the Indian government announced plans to introduce hydrogen fuel cellpowered trains to replace diesel.
Whilst a pilot project to convert an existing broad gauge DEMU to hydrogen has been announced, to be used on the Jind-Sonipat line operated by Indian Railways-owned Northern Railway, north east of Delhi, the bigger order planned by the government is for 35 hydrogen-powered trains to be used on India’s famous narrow gauge ‘heritage’ railways.
