AN application to build a new rail freight terminal on a 662-acre site between the Leicester-Birmingham railway line and the M69 motorway close to the village of Elmesthorpe, near Hinckley in Leicestershire, has been accepted by the Planning Inspectorate.
Tritax Symmetry withdrew its initial submission in February after being told by the Inspectorate that it failed to provide the required technical report. Its acceptance of the updated documents means that the proposals will now be assessed and stakeholders, including the public, will be asked for their views. A six-month examination of the plans, which include up to 850,000 square metres of warehouse and ancillary space, is expected to begin later this year.
Tritax says it could create over 8000 jobs and there would be the potential to operate 16 trains a day, up to 775 metres long, each removing the need for 76 lorry journeys.
