No. 4472 arriving at Kingswear in summer 1973.
FROM Kingswear, there is a mile of level line to Britannia Crossing, which was a halt often used by cadets from the Naval College across the river in British Railways days, but which was still in operation when the line was taken over as a heritage operation.
If a passenger at the halt wanted to join a train hauled by Flying Scotsman then, after boarding, the consist had to reverse back to Kingswear to get a run at the steep hill up towards Churston, as its driving wheels were good for speed but less good at making a standing start on an incline.
