OVER a 10-day period in April, a new pre-cast bridge weighing 5000 tonnes was installed on the West Coast Main Line (WCML).
The £16.9 million project is part of the regeneration of the former Ravenscraig steelworks site.
Built on-site over a 10-month period by Network Rail and STORY Contracting engineers, the completed structure was eased into position using remote-controlled vehicles called self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs), in what is believed to be the biggest move of its kind in Europe.
Between April 1 and 10, engineers dismantled the track and overhead equipment and cut into a section of embankment, removing about 36000 tonnes of material to create a gap for the structure.
