SANKEY viaduct at Newtonle-Willows, the world’s oldest railway viaduct, is undergoing repairs costing £3.8m.
Built between 1828-1830 on the first intercity route between Manchester and Liverpool, the George Stephenson designed Grade I listed structure will be repaired over the next four months, ensuring the viaduct is in a good condition to mark its bicentenary.
Laser scanners and drones have been used to map every inch of the structure as part of the major restoration project. The work includes: Repointing mortar using specialist heritage mixes to match the existing materials; extensive brickwork repairs; painting of metalwork in heritage colours; installation of strengthening anchors; weed and vegetation removal; removal of graffiti. The structure will also get three new pairs of pattress plates. The scaffolding being used will be free-standing so as not to interfere with the historic structure.
Engineers will also monitor areas needing any further attention in the future.
