SOUTH Tynedale Railway Preservation Society celebrated its 40th anniversary with a September 16 gala event, showcasing the 2ft gauge line’s steam, diesel and batteryelectric motive power.
Trains returned to the onetime standard gauge Alston branch trackbed on July 30, 1983 when the first section of the newly created narrow gauge line from Alston to Gilderdale Halt opened to passengers, the last BR passenger train to have left Alston being on May 1, 1976.
