THE North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group (NELPG) celebrated the centenary of its NER‘P3’on September 19 with an event on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) where it currently operates.
The Darlington North Roadbuilt 0-6-0 has been repainted for its centenary into the original livery in which it was outshopped as‘P3’No. 2392 in 1923.
On September 19, No. 2392 arrived at Pickering station at 10am with a freight train, as it used to do for its many years of operation from its base atYork. It was met by a party of invited guests, including Geoffrey Worsdell – great grandson of Wilson Worsdell, the locomotive’s designer, and Peter Lattimer – great grandson ofTW (William) Worsdell, the older brother of Wilson, and whom Wilson succeeded as locomotive superindent on the North Eastern Railway in 1890, together with Peter Lattimer’s godson, Carl Worsdell.
Also present were some of those who were at the inaugural meeting of the NELPG in 1966 at which the decision was made to try and purchase the engine from BR, along with volunteers who have worked on the loco over the years.
