ALMOST 4000 people from across the UK have now received training in rail safety awareness, organised byVicta Railfreight.
Described by industry body the Rail Freight Group (RFG) as “groundbreaking”, the training is given to workforces whose role is likely to bring them into the vicinity of freight yards and maintenance depots. This includes staff and contractors working at quarries, ports, power stations and waste recycling centres, along with roles such as port police and security guards.
The courses are tailored to the customer so that they cover their specific location and operations needs and include modules to identify local hazards. They cover railway terminology, the railway environment, employee responsibilities, safety when walking and working on sites, emergencies and effective communication.
Along with other RFG members, Cemex UK has been involved in tailoring the course for the construction sector. It now forms part of ongoing safety instruction for its new employees. Company operatives and other staff working at railheads take part in the training every two years.
