Woodhead museum plan
PLANS have been submitted to Tameside Council, Greater Manchester, for a museum dedicated to the former Woodhead Line between Manchester and Sheffield. The Woodhead Railway Heritage Group museum would be based in a vacant Network Rail building at Guide Bridge station, and it is hoped it could become a tourist attraction.
The Woodhead Line closed as a through route in 1981 when the section between Hadfield and Penistone was take out of use, although regular passenger services had ended in 1970. The line was electrified at 1500V DC and was famous for its fleet of Class 76 and 77 locomotives. The WRHG is also trying to raise funds to acquire a Class 506 EMU cab for the museum.
