ONCE the extensive overhaul of Gateshead No. 10 has been completed, Beamish Museum has confirmed that Oporto No. 196 is next in line for a mechanical overhaul and body repairs.
Also referred to as South Shields No. 196 and currently carrying related advertisements and the royal blue and primrose colours of South Shields Corporation Tramways, it could also gain a new livery if the current paintwork proves to be beyond repair.
Built in 1935 to a 1909 American design at the Boavista Works of the Oporto Tramways Company, it was brought to Beamish in 1989 with the intention of it being a source of spare parts, but its sound condition and ability to run on arrival saw it repaired and converted into a fully-enclosed car, mainly for off-season use.
Oporto No. 196 is next in line for overhaul at Beamish. The car is seen in the 1900s town on July 8.
