NETWORK Rail has completed the £3.8 million refurbishment of a bridge spanning the A8 at Saltmarket, near Glasgow Cross, ahead of schedule.
The lattice bridge has been given new steelwork where there were signs of corrosion and 1000 new rivets were replaced before the whole structure was repainted. Timing of some of the noisier elements of the work required community engagement and liaison with Scotrail to reduce overnight work during the week. The non-electrified line connects High St Jct, near Bellgrove, with Shields Jct, crossing the River Clyde via the City Union Bridge, and is mainly used by empty stock movements for maintenance.
