OVER 500 days into the ongoing war with Russia, Ukraine is planning for the future and with various European partners is adding fleets of second-hand but still usable trains, trams and metro trains to help Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia or UZ) and city transport operators replace trains damaged or destroyed by Russian attacks. All the trains pledged so far are standard gauge so need regauging to 1520mm for use in Ukraine.
Poland has donated 10 sixcar Soviet/Russian built metro EMU trains from the Warsaw Metro to the Kyiv Metro; some are already in use there. The 81 series Metrowagonmash-built trains are also used by Kyiv (and by the system in Kharkiv) and despite being built in some cases in 1990, were not used until 1995 when the first section of the Warsaw Metro actually opened! Warsaw is now replacing the older trains with 37x6 car Škoda‘Varsovia’ EMUs being delivered by Škoda in the Czech Republic.
