IARNRÓD Éireann (IÉ) awarded a €28 million contract for train-charging infrastructure at Drogheda to Alstom to allow battery electric DARTs to operate the Dublin to Drogheda services in advance of electrification of the route as part of DART+ Coastal North, north of Malahide.
The fast-charging infrastructure on two platforms and one siding at Drogheda is due to be installed by the end of 2024 to enable new batteryelectric DART+ trains currently being built in Poland to enter service in 2025.
Funded by the National Transport Authority, three lines at Drogheda will be electrified, and includes supporting infrastructure along with a new sub-station at Marsh Road.
It will be capable of charging up to three 10-car units per hour. Additionally, overnight charging will occur, and regenerative braking will replenish batteries on the move.
