VISITORS to the Great Central Railway on August 19/20 were transported back to the 1960s as the line held its popular Railways atWork event.
Star of the show wasWR 4-6-0 No. 6990 Witherslack Hall, running as scrapped classmate No. 6988 Swithland Hall. The ‘Modified Hall’made a welcome return following completion of boiler repairs.
A key part of the event was the re-creation of a time when railways played a pivotal role in Britain’s logistics sector. No fewer than three rakes of the restored goods wagons based on the GCR were in operation each day – and Quorn & Woodhouse yard was a hive of activity with re-enactors loading and unloading wagons in the sidings.
