IT is always delightful to read your excellent magazine until, that is, I come to pictures of engines being taken by road, when my heart begins to sink. Many recent issues seem to have featured at least one such photograph (the July edition had three) and I wonder what image this gives of our railways?
At a time of profound environmental concern, when there’s a desire and need to shift from road transport to rail, the image of the very engines which could haul goods being carried on our roads seems ironical, even incongruous.
I don’t recall this happening much in the past, but it seems almost normal now – what a sad reflection of our transport system.
