‘Deltic’ No. 55013 The Black Watch pauses at York on July 26, 1980, with the 1E10/09.10 Dundee-King’s Cross, which it worked throughout. The loco survived in traffic almost to the end of the class, being withdrawn on December 20, 1981.

August 19 saw the Deltic Preservation Society’s No. 55009 Alycidon – in the guise of The Black Watch – haul UK Railtours’ ‘Coronation Deltic’ tour from King’s Cross to Scarborough (top-and-tail with No. 47813), seen heading the return leg at York in almost the same spot as the 1980 photograph. Sadly the loco later failed at Newark and had to be rescued by No. 47848.

Totnes still had its semaphore signals when this shot was taken of blue and yellow HST power car No. 43191 arriving with an up service and taking the line into the platform in autumn 1982.
