EARLY September has been set as the target for management of the WirralTransport Museum in Birkenhead to transfer to the Big Heritage community interest company.
In March, Wirral Council approved proposals for the notfor-profit firm, which operates a number of other local historical attractions, to take on a 25-year lease.
A report to the authority’s Tourism, Communities, Leisure & Culture Committee said the changeover offered potential for the museum and its half-mile long tramway toWoodside to be a“compelling visitor attraction”for up to 40,000 visitors a year.
In contrast, under council management and reliant on members of the Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society for day-to-day operation, its opening hours have been restricted to weekends, school and bank holidays, bringing a footfall of 6000 people per annum.
