When I read in the mainstream railway press that Poland is the last country where you can experience real steam, it strikes me that perhaps they are overlooking the Isle of Man Steam Railway. For since the government took over running the railway from the Isle of Man Railway Company in the 1970s, it has continued to operate it commercially. It is not a heritage railway in the strictest sense of those words. Surely it is still operating as it always has and is therefore one of the last railways still operating timetabled steam over its original route?
