BISBEE’S RICH HISTORY OF MINING

POST MINE CLOSURES THE POPULARITY OF BISBEE MINERALS LIVES ON PART II
Tourists today can enjoy an underground tour of the old Copper Queen mine and see the area where miners worked.
Mining mules lived underground much of their lives and were the primary source for pulling the heavy ore cars.

In part one of this series about Bisbee (published in the August issue of Rock & Gem) we related a brief history of the discovery and opening of the mines. Mining in those earliest days was rough and dangerous. Conditions of work underground were difficult, even causing the miners to strike in 1917. We also described some of the region’s more famous species including azurite, malachite and cuprite.
