SLEEP YOUR WAY TO SUCCESS

Danish rowers are doing everything to get ahead – including working out how to do nothing well.

Most people would agree that you can´t sleep your way to success. Nevertheless, the Danish rowing national team have now launched a research project in which, through the help of measuring devices, they will attempt to optimize their sleeping patterns and thereby create the basis for greater physical endurance and better workouts. Sleep is something people often take for granted. It is also often the first thing we sacrifice when we are busy, and poor sleep is often the first sign of stress or anxiety. However, scientists stress that quality sleep is vital to our health, our well-being, and our performance.

Sports physiologist, Lars Johansen is at the helm of the project for the Danish national team. He explains that our sleep consists of five different phases which are characterized by varying brain activity, movement of the eyes and the muscles of the body. How much the athletes need → to sleep depends on their genetic conditions in relation to how much and how hard they train, their age, time of the year, etc. Most adults normally need seven to nine hours of shut-eye at night to reach their best rhythm of sleep. It will have a negative effect on your immune system if you don´t get enough sleep, and the body will get more vulnerable to colds and the flu during the winter, says Johansen.
