Still only 24 and 25 years old, the Lithuanian women’s double of Milda Valčiukaitė and Ieva Adomavičiūtė have won pretty much every international gold medal going in rowing, bar the Olympic gold. With just over a year to go until the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Row360 catches up with the rising stars as they keep their eyes firmly fixed on the prize.

Can you describe what it was like to win your first senior world championships last year?

Ieva: I remember watching the finals on Saturday, the day before our own final, and wondering what it must feel like to be a senior world champion. When I saw how happy the athletes were, it brought tears to my eyes. On the day of our own final we were aware that the conditions were challenging, but we were determined to do the best we could. I knew that Milda had good technique for rowing in a tail wind, so I listened to everything she said; we tried to be quick and light. Luckily we got into a good rhythm. Before we knew it we were crossing the line. We couldn’t believe that we had just won.

Milda: After the final of the 2018 world champs I started believing that miracles really do happen. Or maybe that course in Plovdiv is just lucky for us. In 2012 we won a gold medal at the world rowing junior championships there. In 2015 Ieva did the same in the single.

What’s your typical day?
