How do you hold a world cup regatta when only part of the world turns up? May 2019 saw Plovdiv, which had hosted a highly successful world cham- pionships last season, stuck in the doldrums through one of those geographic and calen- dar conjunctions which beset regatta chairs from time to time. Many of the big European nations decided not to go there for the first world cup of this summer, disliking the significant land-journey time for the boats only three weeks before the European championships. With the Antipodeans and North Americans also finding the cost-benefit analysis discouraging, this left the Dutch, the Eastern European nations and China, the first and last of which gleefully grabbed as many medals as possible
