Moody Moe Master Of His Own Mind

Sunday 1st October 2017, and we’re in the bustling media tent at the Sarasota-Bradenton world championships. Across the table is the gentle giant of the British squad, Mohamed ‘Moe’ Sbihi. His presence is causing quite a frisson of interest, which I’m certain he hasn’t noticed. Several female volunteers are quietly swooning in the corner, and even the more hardbitten male photographers are sneaking pictures when they think we’re not looking.

Moe Sbihi is everything you’d want your rower son or daughter to grow up to be. Strong, talented, dedicated, hardworking and successful. The last eight years have yielded him six world championship and two Olympic medals, along with a string of world cup successes, an erg world record and two European titles. He stands six foot eight without his shoes on, has a grin that can make you feel it’s your birthday, and a voice like being drenched in molten chocolate. And yet the reason why he is such an inspiration is none of these, but because he is brutally, scorchingly, honest with himself. Despite being almost painfully shy with strangers, he is possibly one of the most self-aware champions currently in rowing. And it’s all because he used to be a brat.
