Holland’s Golden Girl Ilse Paulis

The strength of the Netherlands’ lightweight female rowing squad has increased remarkably over the past 15 years. Until Athens 2004, Romania was the nation to beat at Olympic level in the lightweight women’s double sculls. The Romanians had taken gold at three consecutive Olympics, starting with Atlanta 1996 where the event first featured on the Olympic programme.

But in 2004, a new nation came to the fore: the Netherlands, with their lightweight scullers Marit van Eupen and Kirsten van der Kolk, took the Olympic bronze. In Beijing four years later, the duo went on to become Olympic champions. Fast forward to 2016 and the Netherlands featured yet again in the centre of the Olympic podium with a new combination of Ilse Paulis and Maaike Head.
