HII
The US Navy’s first Flight III Arleigh Burke class destroyer has completed builder’s sea trials, ahead of delivery in 2023. The future USS Jack H. Lucas (DDG 125) is the 75th Arleigh Burke (DDG 51), but the first to be equipped with the latest AN/SPY-6 radar.
The new Air and Missile Defense
Radar system is so power-hungry that Flight III vessels require four-megawatt generators for the SPY-6 to function, in comparison to the Flight IIA’s three megawatts. She also requires a larger hull to accommodate the extra power and cooling requirements.
