Norway’s Halten Bulk, which currently operates a fleet of seven small self-discharging bulk carriers in short-sea service, plans to build a pair of hydrogen-fuelled bulkers that will be assisted by rotor sails following €13.74 million in funding provided by state-owned Enova. Designed by Førde-based Norwegian Ship Design, and to be named Feed Ventu and Feed
Solaris, the twin 100m-long ships will have a cargo hold volume of around 8,000m3 and carry travelling cranes for discharge operations.
Both will be outfitted with two large rotor sails, one mounted aft and the other above the navigation bridge. The main engines will burn a combination of 70 per cent hydrogen and 30 per cent marine gas oil at startup but will use a greater proportion of hydrogen as more bunkering stations become available.
