WAN HAI LINES
Taiwanese container ship operator Wan Hai Lines has invited shipbreakers to submit tenders to demolish ten feeder vessels in its fleet, the first sign of significant scrappage in the container market since early 2020. The vessels are the oldest units in the fleet, built between 1994 and 1998, with four 1,088TEU and six 1,368TEU capacity vessels.
As part of Wan Hai’s sustainability requirements, the ships must be recycled by environmentally friendly scrap yards, with ten yards at Alang,
India, with Hong Kong Convention certificates being nominated. The 11th largest container operator in terms of capacity, Wan Hai has been busy acquiring second-hand vessels over the past two years, as well as taking delivery of several vessels from Japanese yards, as part of fleet replacement schemes.
