PADDLE STEAMER WAVERLEY ENJOYS BUSY SEASON

During the autumn the paddle steamer Waverley made a welcome return to the south coast of England and the Thames, taking thousands of trippers out so they could enjoy a trip down memory lane on the historic vessel.

Late summer is a good time to photograph ships, as there is usually good light to produce excellent images. South coastbased photographer Phil Kempsey spent an afternoon at Calshot, where there are fine vantage points for ship photographers and where a variety of ships can be seen heading to or from the busy Port of Southampton, making it a favourite location for spotters.

Today, Norfolk Navy Yard is the biggest and greatest naval base in the world, covering an area of over 1,275 acres with about four miles of berths. Patrick Boniface looks back at over 250 years of the yard’s operations, which have been central to the expansion of the US Navy.

The Port of Hamburg is the third busiest port in Europe (after Rotterdam and Antwerp) and 15th largest in the world. For the shipspotter it is an excellent place to see a wide variety of ships.

On exercise with HMS PRINCE OF WALES

In June 2022 the 65,000-ton Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales sailed from the Spanish port of Rota to conduct training as part of the FLOTEX exercise. Richard M. Jones was on board and wrote a day-by-day account of his time with Britain’s biggest warship.
