A windshield has recently been installed to the containership ONE Trust’s bow. She is the first containership of this size to have such a device fitted, and is pictured making her first visit to Southampton in the new ONE livery and with the windshield.

Mitsui OSK Lines’ container ship ONE Trust arrived in Southampton on 19 November 2022 fitted with a new bow wind deflector, which is expected to reduce fuel consumption by two to four per cent, depending upon weather conditions. Built by Samsung Heavy Industries in 2017, the ship was launched as MOL Trust with a capacity of 20,170TEU, one the world’s largest capacity container ships at the time.
The Japanese company has experimented with this kind of structure on one of its smaller ships, the 6,724TEU MOL Marvel, in 2015, before installing the device on the larger ONE Trust at the Qingdao Beihai Shipyard in China.
The next vessel to have a wind deflector fitted is ONE Tradition (ex-MOL Tradition), and deflectors are to be fitted to a series of new 24,000TEU ships being built at the Imabari Shipyard in Japan. AM
