FREEDOM OF THE SEAS QUEEN OF THE MIAMI CRUISE FLEET

Currently the largest ship sailing from Miami on scheduled three- and four-night cruises to the Bahamas, Royal Caribbean International’s Freedom of the Seas underwent an extensive $116 million revitalisation before the pandemic halted cruising. Among the many and varied ships to visit ports on the busy Humber estuary are small coastal tankers, as tug engineer Talbot Clark’s photographs show.

HMS HERMES FIRST OF A KIND

HMS Hermes, which went down 80 years ago, is regarded as the world’s first aircraft carrier. James Hendrie traces the ship’s career from her construction, which started in the last years of the Great War, to her sinking by the Japanese in World War II.

THE SUSSEX INCIDENT

To many older Glaswegians, especially those who lived through World War II in the Partick and Yorkhill areas, the bombing of the cruiser HMS Sussex in 1940 will long be remembered as the ship ‘with the bomb that went doon the funnel’. Bob Wright, Chairman of the Scottish Fire Heritage Group, recounts what happened.
