REPORT INTO THE SUSSEX INCIDENT
The official Royal Navy report into the Sussex incident was somewhat scathing of the efforts of the crew to deal effectively with the initial blast and subsequent fire. Very little reference was made to the sterling work of Firemaster Chadwick and his men in saving HMS Sussex and preventing a potential catastrophe in the west end of Glasgow.
The Lord Provost of Glasgow, Patrick Dollan (later Sir Patrick Dollan) had no such reservations and congratulated Firemaster Chadwick and his personnel on their actions. This was conveyed to the Officers and Men of the Regular and Auxiliary Fire Brigades and also the Female Staff and Messenger Boys connected with the various Control Rooms.
