Shooting Gazette  |  June 2016
THE STALKING ISSUE
In pursuit of fur, feather and fin. All things are possible. But first there are rooms to explore, billiards to be played on a dusty table with wonky queues, and creased copies of Shooting Gazette from 1995 to be perused in the bath before cocktails in the faded grandeur of the drawing room.
And when all are there assembled, it is time to catch up with friends,
exchange news and make plans for the week. There will be stalking. That is the principal purpose of the week, after all, but it might very well be that there are some grouse to be walked-up, and it would be a very strange Scottish estate that didn’t have a loch or two with some trout within, or a stretch of single bank where a salmon might be encountered. All of which means that a MacNab may be on the cards. Salmon, stag and a brace of grouse is the senior version, but a trout, two pigeon and a rabbit is an adequate challenge for junior members of the household.
All of which is good and positive and genial and wonderful.
