WILDFOWLING IN APRIL
Stepping out of my house on the Isle of Lewis on the Sunday that the clocks
went forward, I heard the unmistakeable sound of a corncrake, croaking in the willows 20m from the door. An early arrival I thought. With little cover to conceal it, it emerged with its odd upright stance and jerky head movements and scuttled across the lawn, passing as it did three unworried grazing greylag geese, a species whose status, in fortyu years, has altered from icon to enemy.
