THE TWELFTH: AS GLORIOUS AS IT'S EVER BEEN
Is 12th August the Glorious Twelfth any more, or have we consigned the saying to history by producing what seems like an endless succession of good seasons with the aid of medication? From Victorian times, that date was one that was so eagerly anticipated, the luggage piled up on London stations complete with double leather gun cases, cartridge magazines and all the other accessories ready for the journey north to the Scottish moors. It was a time to get out of the city for many, romanticised by the Victorians. Yet given that we are blessed with so many other species to shoot as sporting quarry in this country, why is the grouse the one that gets the press coverage?
