Growing up, my grandad would always buy a Christmas ham. I never ate ham at any other times of the year, but it was just the ‘done thing‘ at Christmas time. Since going vegan, I’ve really enjoyed creating my own traditions. Trying out recipes for mushroom wellingtons, egg-free Yorkshire puddings and coconut chocolate mousse has breathed a new sense of excitement into the season. Yet I still find myself bogged down with consumerism when it comes to present buying. Sometimes it’s hard to leave those old ways behind, but this year I feel it’s more important than ever for us to have a celebration that doesn’t impact our planet. Find out what can be done — including how to rent a real Christmas tree! — on p20.
We also have a fantastic gift guide this issue, to help you through that minefield of vegan Christmas shopping (p14) and when you’re ready to start planning your festive menu, hop to p32 for some delicious ideas.
