Rumors of a supernatural phenomenon circulated among residents of two Indian states, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, in July 2015. Residents were baffled by white or light gray marks that had been inexplicably appearing on mortar and pestle and grinding stones, common in Indian homes. Many feared that “mysterious forces” had entered the homes at night and left the marks.
