Klask

A hangover gave Mikkel Bertelsen the idea of a lifetime. Five years on, the Danish inventor’s Klask has become a magnetic sensation with an irresistible pull

Plenty of people come up with oncein- a-lifetime ideas after a few drinks; who hasn’t rambled at length to friends about their bulletproof Dragons’ Den pitch or billion-pound patent, egged on by a couple of pints? Few people remember those ingenious creations in the hazy light of the next morning. Fewer still go on to make them a reality. A fraction of the fraction of a fraction turn them into a once-ina- lifetime success. Mikkel Bertelsen is among them.

It began with a hangover.

“I was a carpenter; I had my own company for like 15 years,” Bertelsen says. “Then one day I had a hangover in my garden and I thought to myself – my mind is a bit weird the day after – that I would like to make something that would be fun for the family.”

In his moment of inspiration, Bertelsen quickly collected some basic materials: magnets from another creation, a pen cap, cardboard.

“The thing just came to me that afternoon,” he says. “It actually just came to me. I have never been a gamer at all; only Monopoly and Uno and stuff, and some table football as well, but not that much. So I have no idea where it came from, because I have no experience in gaming at all.”

By the evening, the Danish inventor had a working demo model of his game. He showed the prototype to his neighbour, who found it fun despite the crude construction. The following day, Bertelsen crafted a wooden version in his garage. This time, he tested it with his employees. Again, the reception was glowing. He was onto something.
