Surprise – Optimus Prime makes an appearance

Whrr-tschzz-tschzz-tschzzchk. You might not know how to spell it, but you almost certainly know what it sounds like: the unmistakeable noise of a Transformer unfolding itself between its towering mech form and its disguise as a car, plane, animal or something even more outlandish, like a gun or boombox.

The noise has been part of the awe of watching Optimus Prime’s Autobots and Megatron’s Decepticons switch forms since Transformers burst onto the scene in the early ‘80s as the original line of robot toys.The accompanying animated TV series gave the previously silent pleasure of folding plastic limbs and flaps into their designated places an extra dose of dopamine, drilling those five bursts of 8 Hz audio into the eardrums of every kid for the next three decades as a Pavlovian response to a flip-up head here or fold-in arm there. It wasn’t just that these mechs could shapeshift; it was that it looked, sounded and felt so darn cool when they did.
