Obviously we are not interested in taking the same trail as any other band but being original just for the sake of originality is hardly of interest either.”

The habit of proclaiming every artist to be re-inventing the wheel has distorted the conversation about creativity in extreme metal. Whether it’s an attempt to stand out from the crowd, the inclination of overzealous music journos to laud every band as the next-bigthing, or perhaps an inevitable consequence of extreme metal becoming increasingly prominent as an art form, this tendency has impacted our understanding of originality in music. Which is why saying that a band such as Irkallian Oracle are ‘changing the face of death metal’, or ‘discovering whole new depths of depravity and darkness’ or some such superlatives would be a misnomer. What this mystery-enshrouded Swedish entity are doing is taking the tools of the trade to delve into their own darkness – and after a debut that sent promising ripples through the underground in ‘Grave Ekstasis’, their second full-length ‘Apollyon’ presents the next gurgling, fetid step into the Hades of the self.

“Basically, the first album was the very first material written by IO and was conceived during a period of about nine months,” the band say via email. “‘Apollyon’ took two years to put together, which obviously might say something about what there is to expect when it comes to how it came out as well. So as there was more time to reflect and work on what we intended to do we could produce something a lot more focused and refined. A lot of work was spent to more or less re-invent ourselves both as musicians and as craftsmen and find new ways to deliver something worthwhile. While the first one was driven by spontaneity and mainly by an initial “feeling” of how we wanted things to turn out, the second album was approached in an almost analytical manner. This of course makes sense, in that ‘Grave Ekstasis’ was supposed to be lunar/ ecstatic in nature, whereas ‘Apollyon’ is solar/ enstatic.”

This month’s cover stars are 25 years old this year and have just released their tenth album, so for Katatonia it’s a double whammy. But with age comes clarity and knowledge and as you’ll have heard for yourselves, the band’s new release ‘The Fall Of Hearts’ is such a brilliant piece of melancholic metal. Perhaps not the most obvious of coverstars, it’s safe to say that Katatonia deserve the honour through consistently delivering awesome albums and going the distance when others have fallen by the wayside. I know you’ll enjoy José’s story as much as I did reading it for the first time. This issue is packed, as always, with a cross-section of brutality and extremity and was brought to you as certain staff members recover from two of the best festivals in the calendar – namely Roadburn and Ritual Festival.
