The role of artist-in-residence

As he prepares for a year as artist-in-residence at Munnings Art Museum, Roger Dellar provides an insight into what he will be painting, the benefits to the artist of taking a residency and shares his tips on how to apply for one and carry it out successfully

Iam writing this article ahead of my year as artist-in-residence at the Munnings Art Museum in Essex*, the former home of Alfred Munnings. Throughout 2019 I will be painting scenes that represent Munnings’ house in today’s society, with visitors enjoying the exhibitions of Alfred Munnings’ paintings. During the year there will be a very special showing of Munnings’ work during his time as a Canadian war artist.

The work I do will show the house and staff– Munnings’ studio, which now also has a tearoom, the events that are planned and the maintenance of the house and gardens.

I will endeavour to cover some of the scenes he painted and the locality, for example the River Stour and Dedham Vale stables. If I find a scene I know he painted I will try to record the differences between what it was like then and how it is today.
