Landscape in focus

Jayne Stokes puts the landscape under the microscope in her miniature landscapes, which she paints in a mix of media, including watercolour, acrylic and collage, as Susie Hodge discovers

With her multiple layers of paint, rich colours and varieties of texture, Jayne Stokes has created a career out of focusing on what most of us often take for granted: aspects of the changing landscape. She can spend hours, weeks and sometimes months creating her richly textured paintings. ‘I want to celebrate the joy that we can experience when we stop and look closely at what surrounds us,’ she explains.

Practical advice

‘Attending art school was probably one of the best experiences I have had,’ says Jayne. ‘It taught me to be selfmotivated, adaptable and resourceful. However, I do feel that I would have benefited from more practical advice about the realities of working as an artist.

q Journey to Smoo Cave, watercolour and collage on paper, 31/4*13in (8.5*33cm). ‘A memorable walk down into Smoo cave in the Highlands’.
